New activities in our Spelling Boxes

In our spelling session today we learnt all about contractions. We then used the playdough, pencils, sticks and foil to practise our spellings.
This week's spellings are: don't, didn't, can't, I'm, we're, hasn't, it's

Skipton Castle

We had a great time at Skipton Castle! We learnt lots of information on our tour around the castle and even went into the scary dungeon!
Here are a few pictures. Have a look on our class page for even more.

This week...

Another busy week in Year 2! In our maths we have been working on developing our addition skills and then applying these to solve missing number and word problems. In our English we looked at the features of non-fiction texts and how these help the reader. Our food technology work was very exciting as we developed our scooping and blending skills to produce our delicious pumpkin soup. If any parents are available to help on our trip to Skipton Castle next half term, please let me know.

Our week...

In our maths we have been applying our place value skills to different problems and also learnt how to use the more than and less than symbols to compare numbers. The highlight of our week was our Lego workshop on Wednesday. We built our own Lego house, garden and car and then learnt how to create a circuit to light them up. Everyone then produced some lovely writing about our session. Here are some photos from our session. Have a look on our class page for even more photos of our day.

This week...

In our maths this week we continued to develop our calculation skills by learning different ways to subtract numbers. Some of us were subtracting really tricky numbers! We then moved on to applying our knowledge to different problems. During our topic work we looked at how to research information and discovered lots of new things about the Royal Family. We then used this information to create a fact file about different members of the Royal Family. Our science work took us outside again to look at what other animals we could find.

Welcome back after the Easter holidays

We have had a busy first week back after the holidays! I hope everyone had a lovely Easter break. We started our new topic, The Royal Family, by locating London on a map and learning about famous landmarks such as Buckingham Palace. Our science lesson took us outside to learn how to identify and name common birds.

Our week...

This week we made the finishing touches on our stories and then edited and improved them. We then began our non-fiction work, focusing on instructions. We looked at a set of instructions on How to trap a dragon, learnt the order of the instructions and then picked out the different features. During our maths we extended our fraction work by using Smarties to find fractions of different amounts. Our topic lesson involved us comparing school life in New Delhi to our own school.

This week

This week we have been looking at fractions in maths. We learnt how to find halves and quarters of shapes and numbers. In our English we began writing our story. The children worked very hard to follow the success criteria and then learnt how to edit and improve their work. We loved our Indian dance workshop on Thursday where we listened to new music and then performed our dance. Thank you to those adults who were able to come and watch our dance, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Our week...

We have spent this week looking at angles and symmetry in maths. We looked at reflective symmetry, creating our own symmetrical patterns outside and learnt how to find different lines of symmetry in shapes. Here are some of our patterns...

During our Maths in Action lessons we took inspiration from the workmen on site and looked at the different ways they would be able to pay for the equipment they were using for our tarmac.

This week...

This week we have been developing our money skills further by looking at how to find change. The children have worked so hard to follow our new steps and apply their knowledge from last week. In our computing lesson we used last week’s algorithm work to program and move a Bee Bot. The children worked very well in groups to complete different missions. A big well done to those children who completed their homework to such a high standard- Mrs Cobb and I were so impressed!

This week...

I have been very impressed with how hard the children have worked this week, especially in their Maths. We have continued our money focus but have been learning how to add amounts. Some children looked at adding 2 digit numbers on a blank number line and some used column addition. During our Maths in Action lessons we looked at different ways to make certain numbers using only 4 numbers. In our topic lesson we learnt about the physical features of a rainforest. We started our new computing topic by learning about algorithms. We went outside to practise creating a set of instructions. We gave our partner instructions to get from 'earth' to 'the moon'.

Rainforest Day

In our first week back we started our topic off with a BANG! We all took part in a Rainforest Storytelling workshop. We learnt about the plants and animals in the rainforest and even created our own rainforest habitat. We then used this to tell the story of our chosen animal.
